Meghan Herning
Super Lawyers Rising Star, 2023 through 2026
Focused Advocacy, Grounded in Trial Experience
Meghan Herning is the founder of Herning Law, a San Francisco firm focused on family law and civil litigation. Her skill set is rooted in litigation experience and a deep understanding of the Code of Civil Procedure, the Evidence Code, and the Family Code. She has extensive discovery, mediation, and trial experience in both civil and family law, including marital dissolution, property division (including complex financial cases), child custody and visitation, and child and spousal support.
Meghan also has substantial experience with domestic violence restraining order matters, from temporary restraining orders through DVRO trials, and with contempt proceedings. Her criminal defense experience and training inform how she handles these cases, whether a client is seeking protection or defending against a request.
A fourth-generation Bay Area native, Meghan practices in courts in all nine Bay Area counties, not only in San Francisco.
Her approach rests on three things: a global strategy tailored to each client's goals, strong advocacy, and efficiency. She works to set each case up for success from the start and keeps her clients' best interests at the center of every decision.
Meghan earned her J.D. from Golden Gate University School of Law in 2016. There she made the Dean's List, received the Faculty Merit Scholarship, competed on the National Trial Team, completed the Summer Trial and Evidence Program, and served as an editor of the Environmental Law Journal. During law school she interned with the Alameda County Public Defender's Office. She earned her B.A. in History, with honors, from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 2009, with a focus on Latin American and African history.
Meghan was admitted to the State Bar of California in 2017. She has been selected to the Super Lawyers Rising Stars list every year from 2023 through 2026, and she speaks English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
